There are journeys in education that begin not with certainty, but with questions: How do we reach every learner? How do we overcome limited resources? How do we make every child feel that they belong? These questions have become part of my journey as a school leader at Mahayahay Integrated School, an Indigenous Peoples community situated in a Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Area (GIDA).
At Mahayahay, the road has never been easy. Distance, limited resources, difficult access, and the realities of living in a geographically isolated community can turn ordinary school responsibilities into extraordinary challenges. Yet our teachers continue to enter their classrooms each day. They teach, listen, encourage, adjust, and try again.
Working in an IP community has also taught me that education cannot be separated from the people we serve. Teaching is more than delivering lessons. It is about knowing the learners, respecting their identity and culture, building their confidence, and helping them see possibilities beyond the limitations of their circumstances.
Sometimes, progress comes quietly. It is the learner who finally speaks with courage. The child who returns to school. The pupil who finally understands a difficult lesson. The learner who begins to believe, โI can.โ
These moments may never appear in a school report or receive an award, but they matter. These are victories worth celebrating.
And behind many of these victories is a teacher who quietly said,
This is what I have come to understand about teaching in Mahayahay. The work is not always dramatic. Much of it happens quietly, patiently, and repeatedly, in the quiet moment when a child who once struggled finally smiles and believes, โI can do this.โ
Teachers may arrive carrying their own burdens, yet they return the next morning carrying hope for someone elseโs child.

This World Teachersโ Day, I celebrate the teachers of Mahayahay; not because the journey is easy, but because they continue despite the difficulty.
In GIDA communities like ours, where distance and isolation can create barriers to education, teachers become more than educators. They become bridges between learners and opportunity, between culture and knowledge, and between todayโs struggles and tomorrowโs possibilities.
My journey from teacher to school leader has taught me one enduring truth:
The road may be difficult. The resources may be limited. The challenges may remain.
But as long as teachers continue to walk, hope continues to move forward.
And that is the quiet triumph of every Filipino teacher.
We teach. We serve. We persevere. We believe.
And together, we make a differenceโone learner, one dream, one life at a time. Happy World Teachersโ Day!
